This $1,500,000 project was completed for $900,000. The savings were made possible through the efforts of over 300 volunteers who donated time and construction skills. All of the out-of-town volunteer teams were housed free of charge at First Baptist Church.
Herman Weaver regularly donated leftovers from church meals to feed lunches to volunteer teams. Jim Moore and Marion Graybeal built four beautiful stained glass windows for the BCM’s new prayer room. Tommy and Francis Nipper made prayer benches out of recycled lumber. Marion Graybeal, Andy Edmondson, Jim, Kay and Scott Bailey, Gene Sanders, Steve Bowman and Vince Vawter built the stage for the worship center and installed baseboard and wall caps for the second floor. Gary Forry painted windows. Gene Reagan cleaned hundreds of bricks. Dozens of other church members spent days in volunteer service.
In the late 1920’s and early 1930’s, Dr. Fred Brown, then pastor of First Baptist church, established a Baptist Collegiate Ministry on The University of Tennessee campus (the ministry was called Baptist Student Union in those days). Since that time, First Baptist Church has been supporting and enabling collegiate ministry on the UT campus. There is no way to adequately express our gratitude to First Baptist. Without First Baptist Church, collegiate ministry on the UT campus would not be possible.
Stop by and allow me to give you a personal tour of what is now one of the finest collegiate ministry centers in the nation.
