Baptist Collegiate Ministry at UT

University of Tennessee BCM Partnership from First Baptist Church, Knoxville on Vimeo.

The Baptist Collegiate Ministry at the University of Tennessee has just completed our building remodeling and addition project. Over 250 were in attendance for the building dedication on August 29, 2009. First Baptist Church made crucial contributions to the project’s successful completion. The church gave $10,000 in budgeted funds. Individual church members were generous financial contributors as well.

This $1,500,000 project was completed for $900,000. The savings were made possible through the efforts of over 300 volunteers who donated time and construction skills. All of the out-of-town volunteer teams were housed free of charge at First Baptist Church.

Herman Weaver regularly donated leftovers from church meals to feed lunches to volunteer teams. Jim Moore and Marion Graybeal built four beautiful stained glass windows for the BCM’s new prayer room. Tommy and Francis Nipper made prayer benches out of recycled lumber. Marion Graybeal, Andy Edmondson, Jim, Kay and Scott Bailey, Gene Sanders, Steve Bowman and Vince Vawter built the stage for the worship center and installed baseboard and wall caps for the second floor. Gary Forry painted windows. Gene Reagan cleaned hundreds of bricks. Dozens of other church members spent days in volunteer service.

In the late 1920’s and early 1930’s, Dr. Fred Brown, then pastor of First Baptist church, established a Baptist Collegiate Ministry on The University of Tennessee campus (the ministry was called Baptist Student Union in those days). Since that time, First Baptist Church has been supporting and enabling collegiate ministry on the UT campus. There is no way to adequately express our gratitude to First Baptist. Without First Baptist Church, collegiate ministry on the UT campus would not be possible.

Stop by and allow me to give you a personal tour of what is now one of the finest collegiate ministry centers in the nation.

~ Dr. Bob Hall, Director

Dr. Shiell to Speak at the Cross Ministry

Dr. Bill Shiell will speak at the Cross on September 16 and October 28.

The Cross meets weekly on Wednesday nights in Panhellenic Building at UT with fellowship and food at 8.30 pm and Praise & Worship from 9-10pm

The Cross is a non-denominational campus ministry focused on the fraternity and sorority community at UT. It operates as an official campus organization and registered non-profit organization (501c3) supported by alumni, parents, friends, foundations and churches. Donations are used to pay the expenses of the ministry, specifically the salaries of the staff and the operating expenses. Donations are also used to offset the expenses of the mission trips for supplies and students who wish to participate, but have financial constraints.

Bible Study for College and Graduate Students
Join us on Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. for Bible study for university students. We have two great options. Our undergrad group meets in the Young Adult Suite, and it's led by Brad Keaton. Our grad students meet in a group called Quarterlife. They meet in the loft of the Library. This group is led by Court Lewis.

Join us on Campus
Our ministry works on campus as much as in the buildings of First Baptist. You'll see us at the Cross in the Panehellenic Building on Wednesday nights at 9:00 p.m. You'll find us at the BCM during TNT on Thursday nights at 7:00 p.m.

Get Involved
College students @ 1B serve by singing in the choir, working in the youth group, and mentoring at-risk kids at South Knoxville Elementary. They work in our Buckner community ministry with homeless clients and assist our Sunday Bible study with special needs children. Ambitious Project at UT Baptist Campus Ministry
During his 32 years as director of the Baptist Campus Ministry at the University of Tennessee, Dr. Bob Hall has taken on lots of projects in ministry both on and off campus. The current project, a total renovation and addition of 8,000 square feet of space at the Melrose Avenue center, ranks right up there with the most ambitious projects ever undertaken at the BCM.

Having begun in June 2008, and slated for completion in January 2009, hundreds of volunteers—including those from First Baptist Church who worked last week—are providing labor that will save $700,000 in thi $1.5 million project.

Dr. Hall reports, “We simply couldn’t do what we are doing without volunteers like those from First Baptist. Please pass along my sincere thanks to all who so generously have given their time and talents to this project.”

Ongoing work will require additional volunteers who can give a few hours, a full day or more time as the project nears completion in a few months. For more information about volunteering, please contact Bob Hall at 546-8272.
